We continue with this Rosary novena for the Church with Our Lady of Fátima as we enter the special month of May that honours the Mother of God.

THE FIRST APPARITION OF THE ANGEL (p. 168ff) by: Venerable LúciaFrom what I can more or less calculate, it seems to me that this first apparition of what I believe to be the Angel took place in 1915, before which time he had not ventured to manifest himself fully. Considering the weather at the time, I believe these apparitions must have occurred between April and October 1915.
On the southern slope of the Cabeço, whilst saying the Rosary with three friends, whose names were Teresa Matias; Maria Rosa Matias, her sister; and Maria Justino, from the hamlet of Casa Velha, I saw hovering above the grove of the valley, which expanded at our feet, something like a cloud, whiter than snow, rather transparent and in human form. My companions asked me what it was. I replied that I did not know. It was repeated two more times on different days.
This Apparition left a certain impression on my mind that I do not know how to explain. Little by little, this impression was fading away; and I believe that were it not for the events that followed, in time I would have come to forget it completely.
I cannot specify the dates with certainty, because during this period I still did not know how to count the years, the months, or even the days of the week. It seems to me, however, that it must have been in the Spring of 1916 that the Angel appeared to Jacinta, Francisco and myself for the first time in our Loca do Cabeço.
In my written account about Jacinta, I have already described how we climbed the hillside in search of a shelter; and how, after having lunched and prayed there, we began to see, at some distance away and above the trees that stretched toward the East, a light whiter than snow in the form of a youth, transparent and more brilliant than a crystal pierced by the rays of the sun. As he drew near, we went toward him, we could make out his features. We were surprised and half absorbed. We did not say a word.
Upon drawing near to us, he said:
"Be not afraid, I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me."
And kneeling down upon the earth he bowed his brow down to the ground. Carried the motion of the supernatural, we imitated him and repeated the words which we heard him pronounce:
"My God, I believe, I adore, I hope in you and I love You. I ask your forgiveness for those who do not believe in you, do not adore you, do not hope in you and do not love You."
A PRAYER OF REPARATION
After repeating this three times, he stood up and said:
"Continue to pray in this way. The hearts of Jesus and Mary are attentive to the voice of your supplications."
And he disappeared.
The aura of the supernatural which enveloped us was so intense, that for a long period of time we had almost no awareness of our own existence, remaining in the position in which he had left us, repeating the same prayer over and over. The presence of God felt so intense and so intimate that we dared not speak even amongst ourselves. The next day, we sensed that our spirit was still enveloped by that aura, which was disappearing only very slowly.
No one thought of speaking about this apparition, nor did it occur to anyone to recommend secrecy; the Apparition imposed these of itself. It was so intimate, that it was not easy to say the slightest word about it. Perhaps the impression it made on us was the greater by virtue of being the first to manifest itself.

TRANSLATOR’S PREFACE: This first section includes altogether four apparitions of the angel. The first was to Lucia and three friends whom she names. There were two other visitations by the angel to the same children, but Lucia does not describe these. There followed three further apparitions of the Angel to Lucia and her cousins, Jacinta and Francisco, which we’ll share at a later post.
